SACEM and SPRE

Last updated: 12 October 2026

Two rights, two beneficiaries

Playing music in a place open to the public gives rise to two separate rights:

  • Authors’ rights, which pay the authors and composers of the work. In France, they are collected by SACEM, the French authors’ rights society, for the authors who are its members.
  • Equitable remuneration (article L. 214-1 of the French Intellectual Property Code), which pays the performers and the producers of the recording. It is collected by SACEM on behalf of SPRE, the body for this neighbouring-rights levy.

With MUNO

Our catalogue belongs entirely to its publisher, which holds all the rights in every track and is not a member of any collective management organisation. There are therefore no authors’ royalties to pay for the music MUNO plays.

Equitable remuneration is still owed by the venue, as for any recorded music played in public, whatever the catalogue. It is not included in the MUNO subscription and is never passed on by MUNO.

Your attestation

With the subscription, each venue receives an attestation in its name: the venue, its zones, where the catalogue comes from and the absence of any affiliation to a collecting society. It also states what it does not cover: equitable remuneration.

It arrives by e-mail when the subscription starts and stays available in your customer area, kept up to date while the subscription runs. Its number can be checked online.

What you do

  • You declare your music use to SACEM, which collects equitable remuneration on behalf of SPRE, and you attach the attestation.
  • You pay the equitable remuneration. The amount depends on the type of venue, its size and its town: it is the amount in your declaration. MUNO does not calculate it and does not declare it for you.
  • If you are inspected, you show the attestation. If you also play music from another source, rights may be due on that music.
